I am researching the history of Major Payne.  He died in the Influenza Epidemic in March 1919.  The War Graves Commision details show him to have been Mentioned in Dispatches three times and the holder of the Belgian Croix de Guerre.  He is not recorded as having been a pilot so I am assuming that he was an Observer.  He joined the RFC on the 13th June 1912 from the Somerset Light Infantry where he was serving as an Orderly Room Sergeant,  His service from mid 1917 is known when he was serving at either No 5 Aircraft Park or No.10.   Does anyone have information on him prior to this time when, presumably, he would have earned his 'mentions' and his Belgian decoration?
