EAST RIDING AIRFIELDS 1915-1920

Geoffrey Simmons

Crecy Publishing Ltd, 1a Ringway Trading Est, Shadowmoss Road, Manchester M22 5LH.

103pp, 197×270mm, softback.

ISBN 9 780954 560591, £12.95.

This is another first class example of local history of which I am so fond (with map contributions from our own Managing Editor). The East Riding became directly involved in WWI as early as December 1914, when the German Navy shelled Scarborough. For the next four years the local landing grounds and marine stations served as bases for British aircraft and airships defending the area and coastal shipping from air and sea attack.

Simmons has researched and written a comprehensive account of the acquisition, construction and operation of the bases in the area, together with the men and machines that flew there. There are some splendid photographs and artwork, clear maps, and a huge Index. Very good.
