Although this book is primarily concerned with ground forces, many of the aspects that it covers could apply to men of the air services and suitable examples are included.

What Darren Moore has done is to provide a detailed insight, via personal testaments, to every aspect of military life, drawing on examples, from numerous nations and from Napoleonic times to the present, that reveal common experiences.

Those experiences are grouped into appropriate chapters that examine everything from enlistment to reaction to ‘friendly fire’ incidents.

The author has done his homework well, as evidenced by a 20 page bibliography and 44 pages of notes. For those like me who have no experience of military service, this is definitely the book to read if you want to gain an understanding of the soldier’s psyche.
