I have assumed this is a Caudron but as I do not have any French references I am stuck again, any one know what it is? The tail number is C 2194 with the numbers repeated on the nose.

Cheers

Hi John

You're right - it's a Caudron G.IV - the bigger, twin-engined version of the G.III.

I suspect that C2194 is the French serial number, or the manufacturer's number, as in the British serial allocations that number belongs to a DH9 ...

C2194 (numero militaire sur le Registre) was a Caudron GIV operated by the French. The other number will be the Caudron Freres construction number (numero de fabrication).

Unfortunately, I have only the c/ns for the GIVs that were sold to Britain, so can't help much there. Mostly these appear with 'C' prefixes, for 'Caudron', as was the French style, though the RNAS aircraft serials have no letter prefix mostly (being too early, the latet GIIIs have the 'N' prefix). The records are with the Caudron Museum at Rue - well worth a visit if you are passing.

British Caudron built GIVs in Cricklewood from 1915 also.

Thanks Nick. There is no indication on the photograph that it is British all then men standing around it appear to be in French style uniforms?
