I am interested in knowing if you have additional information on 42 Squadron, particularly photos of any of the members. My grandfather served in the RFC/RAF from 1914-1919, and more specifically in this squadron from late 1917 to early 1918. I believe he spent the majority of his time with 42 in Grossa. He is included in your list - John Reekie. I have background information on him if you like.

Thanks,

Eric

Hi,

I have copies of the squadron Record book and an Army file about him, as they are huge files (mb) I cannot post them here but if you contact me at www.66squadron.co.uk I could put them on DVD for you.

I believe my great uncle, 2nd Lt. Hillis James Ward McConnell served in either 34 or 42 Sqn RFC.
He flew RE 8's and served May to Oct 1917. Last entry in hes log book was 'Going to Italy' Oct 1917.
I have is log book for this time period and can send photos to those interested. Would appreciate knowing more about my Uncle particularly the squadron he served in.
Thank you

Hi,
Sorry about the delay.

It would appear that your Great Uncle did not served with either 34 or 42 squadrons and according to his RAF officers record he did not actually go to Italy.

His records shows that he served with the following.

05/09/16 Gazetted T/2Lt on Probation with effect from 17/08/16,
19/09/16 1 School of Military Aeronautics.
24/11/16   3 School of Instruction, Aboukir, Egypt for Instruction in Aviation.
11/12/16   unclear,
01/02/17    Confirmed in rank,
22/04/17   Training Brigade for posting,
04/04/17   36 R.S. Beverley,
08/05/17   15 R.S. Doncaster on appointments as Flying Officer,
26/05/17    52 Squadron at Bray- Dunes,
29/05/17    Gazetted T/2Lt Flying Officer w.e..f 08/05/17,
30/12/17    To hospital (sick),
14/02/18     Unfit General Service,
13/03/18     Unfit General Service and Home Service
16/03/18     Gazetted T/Lt w.e.f 17/02/18,
10/04/18     Unfit General Service,
14/05/18     Unfit General Service and Home Service.

Other records Medal Card and Canadian records.
Undated 32 Regt (Vol) Lt served one year No dates.
28/04/16 enlisted as Pvt s/n 12662284 4th Division Ammunition Sub Park.
He had joined the Royal Field Artillery and served as a Lt prior to joining the RFC.
There is a file at the National Archives Class WO 339/69202 in his name, but these are not on line and you would need to contact a researcher who could copy it for you.

It would be interesting to see his log book details and a photo is always welcome.

I hope this helps

John-g

John,
Thank you very much for your email and details of my Uncles service . If you forward your email to me at 67g80cs at gmail dot com I will send photos of his log book. I also have a photo with him and other sqn members apparently taken at the Milan aerodrome in 1917. From his log entries, I understood he served near the town Belgian town of Nieuwpoort ( Nieuport in French).
Cheers, Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I think I have found him? He does not appear in 42 Squadron records that I have, but I have found records of a 2Lt and Lt McConnell, MacConnell, and other variations in a 34 Squadron Record book, one of the entries list him as 2/Lt H ? McConnell.

The first flight I found was dated 20/11/1917 when he flew RE A3410. He then flew another eleven flights most frequently in RE 8 B5034 and once in C5034. There are entries for an A5034, which I think is an error.

I have checked the Record books for Jan/Feb and early March 1918 and have not found an entry for him.

Flights are recorded on the following dates. Presumably you can tie these up with his log book>

201/11/17, 23/11/17, 30/11/17,05/12/17,10/12/17, 13/12/17, 15/12/17, 16/12/17,18/12/17, 20/12/17, 27/12/17 and 31/12/17.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
