Vann and Bowyer's XV Squadron RFC/RAF 1915-19, which was published in the Cross and Cockade Journal in 1973 includes a reference to "Lt C R M Douglas, a professor of meteorology before joining the RFC" (page 66). I'm intrigued by the reference since he wasn't a "professor of meteorology", rather he had a passionate interest in the subject and recorded temperatures and cloud types whilst flying. However, for the statement to be made means he must have gained some notoriety for his idiosyncrasy - and I'd like to find the source of the claim.

I'm wondering if it was in AIR 1/689/21/20/15 (15 Squadron History) and if anyone has a copy of the file?  Douglas was still living when the article was written (died 1982) and would never have made the claim himself.

Most of the RE8 photographs that accompany Vann and Bowyer's article are for the summer of 1918, and I wonder (I do a lot of wondering) if any other photos have emerged during the last 40 years that relate to the autumn and winter of 1917-18. I have the numbers of the 13 RE8s in which Douglas flew, and would dearly like to trace an image of any one of them, or a group photo in which he appears.

Being pedantic it was Lt C K M Douglas.  Of the 13 RE8s he flew whilst with the squadron only two appear in the the end summary list of known aircraft.

Any help would be appreciated.

Unfortunately most of those are incomplete as all R.E.8 serial had a prefix letter.

Nor, I am afriad do I have photos of any of those for which you have complete serials.

You say your man was a Flight commander; obviously of "B" flight, the numbers B1, B2 etc have no relation to the aircraft serial but being its number within the flight.
Sorry I can't be of more help.
best wishes,

Thank you for looking Paul, I thought from the start it was a long shot- but worth trying none the less.
