Has anyone a copy of AIR1/1375/204/23/30 (Pt 2 Daily Orders of 18 Squadron)? If so is there any reference to a 2nd Lt C K M Douglas (Observer on probation) joining in October or early November 1915. His Casualty Card has him embarking (I assume with the squadron for France) on 10 November, and arriving 11 November, so he must have joined prior to this. Brian |

DGM I looked at the new Flight Index on our C&CI

aeroplanes and no dates. But found this on -1916 pg 582: Flying Officers

Thank you for your help Derek. I have Douglas's Pilot' Log Book which, although it covers his flights, doesn't record when he qualified for his Wings. I assume the reference to him being graded Flying Officer on 10 May 1917 is the date these were awarded.
(Just as a matter of interest Douglas made his first training flight as a pilot on 10 March 1917 and went solo on 31 March (his instructor was Lt Layton for most of the period. His instruction was with 26 Reserve Sqn at Edinburgh. He transferred to 83 Sqn, Spittlegate, in the second week of April and made his first flight there on the 17th.)
So far as his Observer career is concerned his personal file in the NA records Douglas joined 15 Sqn at Swingate Down for instruction on 21 June 1915, but contains nothing thereafter. Using the forum facility I found an undated post about 18 Sqn from 'Rick' that referred to AIR1/1375/204/23/30 and I was hoping Douglas's name appeared therein so as to give me a date for transfer.

Brian, Air-Britain published a slim volume by A. Butterworth in 1989 that was titled With Courage and Faith - the story of No.1 18 Squadron Royal Air Force.
I don't think there is likely to be anything specific about your man in the book, but there is a note on the title page that states 'for those interested in greater detail, the full manuscript of 250,000 words has been deposited with the RAF Museum at Hendon and may be consulted on application to the Director of Archives there.' Much obliged Errol. I'll borrow the A-B version from my library, if nothing else it might give me a feel for life in the squadron in 1915-16.
