There's a steady drip of original documents being sold on Ebay and other auction sites. These will often excite comment as, down the years, quite a few documents have been stolen from the The National Archives (TNA) - and of course no-one wants to purchase an item, only to find out that it's stolen property!
We've been talking to TNA management about this issue. They've taken an interest, and have checked out some of the items we've brought to their attention. So far all look to be legitimate - which is good news. To help identify potentially dodgy documents, we asked if they had a list of what was missing, which we could publicise - but they haven't.
After discussion, the suggestion is that if anyone spots an item on Ebay or elsewhere, that looks like it could be an original document, we let them know. The way to do that is through the contacts page on their web site:
This is monitored by a team, who will pass the tip-off on to the appropriate department. Happy hunting!
