This is a very readable yet highly detailed account of the airship R34, from her inception, following examination of the downed German L33 during 1916, to her being broken up in 1921.

The background to R34’s Trans-Atlantic flights is set in the first third of the book, which brings in her construction, previous attempts by American rigids, the decision that she should be used for such an adventure and the preparations at East Fortune.

The outward and return journeys are then detailed on a day to day basis and the awe in which such a feat was held at the time is apparent in the author’s account of its arrival in New York and return home.

The aftermath and the consequences of R38’s loss close the book and make for something of a bring-down.

There is a small section of photographs. I found them hardly necessary, because George Rosie has researched his subject so well, shows such a good understanding and writes so fluently. Anyone wishing to learn about this airship need look no further.
