I would like to identify these men. I know that the chap sitting in the middle front row is S.S.B. Purves. The reverse has some names but I cannot make all of them out. Any help appreciated. The photograph is dated 09/04/17.

Hi,
The last 2 signatures are difficult to make out. Through the 1910 Edinburgh phone book and several guesses, I found a James H Thin living at 2 Chalmers Cres. Looking at the family on the 1901 Census (at the same address), they have a son named James A. Thin. I believe this may be your man. Here is the medal card:

The signatures are indeed difficult to make out. Let’s see
what you and others think. Can you say in which camp the photo was taken? Not Holzminden,
I think. Regards, Patrick  In order, Here is what my records suggest:  Lieut. Herbert GRIMWOOD, 22/Manchesters, POW 14.3.17. Mentioned in Hugh Kingsmill, Behind Both Lines, and Phillimore, G. W. P. (Lord Phillimore) Recollections Of A Prisoner Of War. Participated in a breakout from Schweidnitz. 2/Lt. Russell Wilfred CROSS, pilot, 11 Sqn., POW 17.3.17, FE2b 7695. His observer was Lieut. C. F. Lodge (see below). Capt. R .C .Q. FOSTER, 17/R. West Surreys, POW 14.3.17. Lieut. C. F. LODGE, observer, POW with Cross on 17.3.17. 2/Lt. L. A. T. STRANGE, pilot, 11 Sqn., POW 31.3.17, FE2b 7691. His observer shot in the air and DOW. 2/Lt. J. M. LAMB, 8/East Yorks, POW 15.3.17. 2/Lt. J. A. THIN, 5 Corps Cavalry, POW 22.3.17 (Probably same man as Karen's post) 2/Lt. Stanley Stuart Beattie PURVES, Yeo. & RFC, pilot, 19 Sqn., POW 19.3.17, Holzminden escape, etc.   |
