FIGHTER ACES! The Constable Maxwell BrothersFIGHTER ACES! The Constable Maxwell Brothers, Fighter Pilots in Two World Wars

Alex Revell

Pen & Sword Books Ltd, as above.

256pp, 160×240mm, hardback.

ISBN 978-1848841772, £19.99.

First published in 1978 titled The Vivid Air and indeed the left hand pages still carry that heading. Written in Alex Revell’s usual attractive and racy style, this book tells the story of two aristocratic Catholic brothers. The elder, Gerald, was chosen by Albert Ball to join 56 Squadron at its inception, scored 27 or 22 victories according to who is counting, had an interesting peace time career and rejoined the RAF for World War II. The younger, Michael, born in 1917, started flying at University and also joined 56 Squadron in 1940, before going on to night fighters in Beaufighters and Mosquitoes. Coincidentally, Gerald scored his Squadron’s 200th victory in World War I, and Michael his Squadron’s 100th in World War II. Good stuff about two very nice gentlemen.
