Colin Pengelly

Pen & Sword Books Ltd, 47 Church Street, Barnsley, S70 2AS.

224pp, 165×240mm, hardback.

ISBN 978-1-8441590-4-8, £19.99

The last biography of Albert Ball was written some thirty years ago by Chas Bowyer, and since then many family papers have vanished. Despite this drawback, the author has written a worthy account of the life and death of a true hero, quite rightly drawing on previous work, as well as research of his own. His many combats are meticulously recorded, and I liked the details of his private life as well. Not only his relationship with his family and girls, but also his attempts to get the Austin-Ball Scout into production. And he died when he was only twenty. Some good photographs, bibliography and index add to the worth of this book.
