I am trying to find out more about the pilot of this aircraft (Flt Lt Francis T Heron) of 206 Squadron. He was from Fife and apparently did his training near Dover. Would there be any more information in the National Archives? His aircraft was last seen near Gheluwe. One question his family asked was why he did his training in Dover when he was from Fife as Montrose was nearer.

His military record is in AIR 76/223/113 which you can download from the National Archives:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D8271728
The casualty card is in the RAF Museum:
http://www.rafmuseumstoryvault.org.uk/archive/heron-f.t.-francis-turretin
The casualty report is in the AIR 1/857 box at the National Archives, but I have sent you a copy.
He appears to have trained at 12TS, which was at Thetford, followed by No.2 SoAFG at Marske

A pilot would not be trained at the nearest airfield. It would depend on available places/requirements and role.
