I found this photo in my G G Uncle's collection stored in the Hendon archives.
There's no indication on the photo as to who this procession might be for. Pretty poor quality but any ideas? ![]() |

Good mixture of Full Dress uniforms - though note that the RFC rankers are in Service Dress - so is likely to be an RFC funeral. The officers in the white helmets are Royal Marines. Full Dress was not issued, other than to the Guards and Household Cavalry, after 1914, so these will be prewar officers.
Cody's funeral ?

Not Cody's; that was a much grander affair, and without the white helmeted marines.

Was Gerrard not invited to Cody's funeral ?
I would guess that they are ASC on the carriage, but the closeness of the Marines suggests that it may be an RFC (Naval Wing) or CFS funeral ? Lt Thomas Scholes Cresswell RMLI KIFA at Calshot on 4.5.1914 Temp Captain Gilbert Vernon Wildman-Lushington RMLI KIFA Eastchurch 2.12.1913 (buried in Christchurch Cemetery, Portsdown Hill)

I'm no expert so feel free to shoot me down on my conclusions. The men on the gun carriage are from an Artillery regiment (you can tell by the helmet badge). It is a pre war funeral going by the R.F.C. Other Ranks uniform and the pomp of it all. The R.F.C. Other Rank and Marine appear to be pilots. You can see what appears to be pilot wings on their uniforms. Having looked up the obituaries of Lt. Creswell, R.M.L.I. and Capt. Wildman-Lushington, R.M.L.I. in the Aeroplane magazine, I would conclude it is not one of their funerals. Their funerals were very much Naval affairs, where as the funeral in this photograph is very much an Army affair. So who's funeral is it? At this point in time I have no idea, but the Marines may still be the key to the mystery. I think I'll have another look in the Aeroplane magazine............ |
