If someone on the forum should have a copy of Kilduff's WWI biography of Herman Goring to hand could they please tell me what it has to say about his combat(s) on 7 Apr 18?

Presumably this relates to Goering's claim to have shot down an RE8 ?

Goering  and nine other aircraft of Jasta 27 took off just after midday for an offensive patrol between Merville & Hazebrouck. He claimed an RE8 shot down 25 km behind the British Lines at about 12:50.

Two RE8s were lost by the RAF on that day:

A 52 Squadron RE8 took off from Abbevile at 08:15. This came down close to the Lines.

A 42 Squadron RE8 took off from Chocques at 12:30 on a photo recce est of Bethune. This was flown by 2Lt Harry Waldo Collier RAF(SR)- a kiwi - and Lt Eric Campbell Musson - 13th Essex regiment attached RAF.

Although Musson was wounded, and the RE8 damaged, Collier managed to get back to Chocques.

Musson claimed that they had been attacked by six Tripes and for Albatri, and had been saved by the intervention of some Nieuports and Camels. Musson fired 200 rounds at his attackers.
