Looking for service details of two observers serving with Aden Flight in 1918.

Both were apparently posted to Egypt for pilot training on or about 27 July 1918.

I have a photo which identifies both these officers back in Aden in December 1918, still as observers.

Did they fail as pilots and were RTU'd?

2/Lt H Sacre.
Capt H H Vickers.

Any information, however insignificant it may seem, would be most useful.
Photos of either would be very helpful to confirm identities.

Thanks Rob,

For the record.
Capt G E Sherwin commanded Aden Flight, from 19 Oct 1917 to 1919.
His initial officers, on arrival in Aden mid November 1917, were:
Lieutenants C H Taylor, Leslie J Mann, J B Thomas (KIA) and J S Owden.
Sergeant (O) C W Hartley was KIA with Lt Thomas, 23 January 1918.

Later flying officers included 2nd Lieutenant J E Pereira (O), Lieutenants C M Eastley, H F Knight, S J Morrell, H Sacre (O), R L Thomas and Captain H H Vickers (O). Lieutenant L A Sturrock was Equipment Officer, and 2nd Lieutenant W A E Featherstone looked after the signals section.

I have found no reference to
Lieut. Winter, J.W. – 1 Gr. Bn. Norfolk Regt. – Proceeded with Aden Flight.
But records are incomplete.

Are there similar Nominal Rolls for the RAF a year later?

My full article is scheduled to appear in V46/4 later this year.

Hi Ian

Lieutenant John William Winter
1st Garrison Battalion, Norfolk Regiment
Flying Officer (Observer)

His Service record confirms he was with the Aden Flight.

I don’t know if there are other nominal rolls that cover your area of interest.

All the best,

Rob

I would assume the GB Thomas on the 114 Squadron Roll is in fact JB Thomas who was Kia. This is a mistake on the original roll.Smile

Rob, could you let me have his posting dates/details for Aden Flight?
I will double check the records.

Thanks

Probably at that date.

But there was a Capt R L Thomas (P) with Aden Flight late in 1918.

Re; Lieutenant John William Winter

Thanks for the Record of Service Rob.

I see Winter was an observer who served with Aden Flight apparently from November 1917 to the Armistice.
He receives no mention in any of the records I have been able to locate. This is not surprising as there are no surviving operation reports (unless someone knows otherwise) just summaries. Pilots are rarely mentioned, observers even less frequently.
