The 3rd battalion would have been a Special Reserve Battalion, from which officers would have been posted to one of the Regular Battalions (1st or 2nd) or elsewhere; though the commission would have remained a Special Reserve one.
The Special Reserve was a training unit, both for those with previous service with the Regulars and new recruits During the Great War, Special Reserve battalions had additional Home Defence duties, often in the coast.

9RS = No. 9 Reserve Squadron (ie, a flying training squadron)
19RS = No. 19 Reserve Squadron (ie a flying training squadron) 39 Sqd = No. 39 (Home Defence) Squadron on appointment as Flying Officer (note that this was not a rank as it became in August 1919 but a branch of the RFC to which those air crew who had graduated, ie got their 'wings', were appointed to). Incidentally, the squadron had been formed from elements of No. 19 Reserve Squadron the previous month. EF 11 Sqd = posted to the British Expeditionary Force & No. 11 Squadron in France. Errol |

Hi there, can anyone help me clarify this officer's service record? I think he was transferred from 1st Battalion Queen's Royal West Surrey to 39 Squadron but I wanted to be sure as the Ps and Qs are very similar. it could be that it means 3rd Battalion, which I know for sure he was with.
If anyone could help me with any of the other abbreviations, I'd be grateful. I'm wondering in particular what the EY in front of 11 Squadron means. Many thanks ![]() |
