I've had an enquiry about Leonard A Kiburz, an American who joined the Canadian Army and then the RFC. In consequence of this, it seems that the main sources on the Canadians ignore him (as he was American), as do those on the Americans (because he pretended to be a Candian).
'The Sky Their Battlefield' notes that :
On 5 June, 1917, 2Lt JH Gotch and Lt LA Kiburz were reconnoitering Roulers-Courtrai-Menin in 70 Squadron Sopwith 1 ½ Strutter A995 ‘B5’ when they were attacked by an enemy aircraft. The Strutter was damaged but Gotch managed to fly it back and it was repairable.
However, Kiburz's Canadian service record notes that he didn't arrive in France until 5 July, 1917, so something must be awry somewhere.
Unfortunately, Kiburz's time with 70 Squadron doesn't overlap with that of Alan Bott's, so there is nothing (but useful background) in 'An Airman's Outing'.
Has anyone researched 70 Squadron's Strutter period and/or could suggest any additoonal reference sources ?
