Scale ModelWorld 2009

The IPMS show, Scale ModelWorld 2009, was held at the International Exhibition Centre, Telford, on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November 2009.

Roger and Andy judged three IPMS classes, for WW1 Aviation models in 1/32 and larger, 1/48, and 1/72 and smaller. We're delighted to report back that entry numbers were up on 2008, and also that the quality of models on display was also significantly improved! I was however surprised there were only three Wingnut models entered in the competitions. Maybe there wasn;t time for people to do them justice - they're fine looking kits! One beautiful Bristol Fighter was unfortunately (for us!) finished as a Mk IV, from 1929, and therefore just outside of our remit. I'm expecting that 2010 will see a far larger entry in the 1/32 section.

However we had no difficulty in deciding on the overall winner of the prestigious Cross & Cockade International Trophy for Best WW1 Aviation Model in Show. The 2009 prize went to an absolutely amazing 1/48 scale Caudron G.IV by Greek modeller Konstantinos Patsaros. The level of detail was phenomenal, and yet so finely made that the model looked realistic! How on earth he managed to transport it, undamaged, all the way from Athens in the overhead luggage compartment of a Ryan Air jet I don't know ...

UK modellers have some ground to make up here, as last year's winner was also from Greece - that gentleman entered a fabulous HP Halifax this year. This year's 1/48 class runner-up was also Greek - with third place going to a Pole with a very nice Ships Camel! Both IPMS and CCI have truly earned their International label this year!!

Apart from the models, the show was highly successful for the society, with many new members being "encouraged" to join by Roger and the team. Put a date in the diary for 13/14th November 2010, and come along! It's well worth the trip. If you think Telford is too far away from the Metropolis, you can always visit the regional IPMS show being held at Hendon on 23rd May 2010 - and say "hello" to the stalwarts manning the CCI stand.
