AV Roe Centenary

On Sunday 12th July 2009, underneath the railway arches on the Walthamstow Marshes,  an exhibition was held to celebrate to 100th anniversary of the first all-British powered flight.

On 13th July 1909 (or maybe 23rd July, depending on what constitutes a "flight") Alliott Verdon Roe became the first man in Britain to fly a British built aircraft. Exactly 100 years later, a replica of this aeroplane was on display at the location this flight took place. As well as the exhibition, at 14:00 there was a talk by the great man's grandson, plus presentations on the history of Avro by David Rowlands of the RAeS and Dr Jim Lewis of Lee Valley Industrial Heritage.
