Liddell and Mick Mannock are the only two faces pictured on the Memorial at St. Omer. His extraordinary braveness in bringing back his heavily damaged RE5, when he was so badly wounded that he eventually succumbed, is astonishing. The fact that it was only his second flight over enemy lines makes it even more remarkable. This book is well documented, with family photographs, maps, a bibliography and index, and draws heavily on letters written by Liddell and other contemporary accounts. Sadly for us, his schooling and service in the trenches with The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders are longer and more fully documented than his very short time in the RFC. Nevertheless, it is a fascinating story of an incredibly nice young man doing his duty as he saw it, supported by his strong Catholic faith. I found this an immensely moving book to read, and cannot recommend it too highly.
