This book is more about verse written about the War than poetry, but it is none the less notable for the sheer emotion so much of the contents displays; it deserves to stand side by side with the established literary canon. It also answers a question I have frequently asked myself: the poets were seemingly all soldiers – why? In this book there are 21 pages of poems written by sailors and 17 by airmen, including the immortal The Dying Aviator. There are some interesting names amongst the contributors to the RFC section – Gilbert Frankau, Paul Bewsher and Gordon Alchin (‘Observer’) for a start. A wonderful book to dip into and enjoy, with an entertaining narrative to help the poems along.
