This the second novel about Tom Ebdon, (the first, Broken Wings, was reviewed in 33/1) who started as a ranker in the trenches, transferred to the RFC, and, after some fighting over the French sector, is now in Italy at the end of World War I, commanding a squadron of Bristol Fighters. He is an engaging character – more serious and factual than Biggles (pace our President), but less amusing than Bartholomew Bandy. The books have interest in that they take us into otherwise under reported areas of the war – the next one is to be set in Russia – and I enjoy them. This one is historically accurate, has some excellent maps, and an engaging love interest as a bonus. Plus a very fine dust cover depicting Bristol Fighters. |
