Uniforms and Equipment of the British Army in WW1

bulletStephen J Chambers, Schiffer and Bushwood, 317 pages, hardback, ISBN 0-7643-2154-4

bulletReviewed by George Miller in Vol 36 No 4, Winter 2005

This is a magnificent collection of photographs, most of which are reproduced to a much higher standard than many that come my way. Starting with the Boer War, we are taken right up to the early twenties through 15 chapters covering everything from Field Infantry to Wheels and Transport, including a couple of RNAS Armoured Cars, Dominion Troops to the Royal Flying Corps (31 splendid pages plus a very pretty WRAF girl in the ‘Miscellaneous’ Section). In general, the RFC types are quite as smart as their army opposite numbers in Studio Portraits, despite the disadvantage in many cases, of having to wear the ‘maternity jacket’. However they look pretty ragged in some of the snapshots, quite understandably. There are over 600 never before published photographs and a lovely set of Army, Corps and Divisional signs reproduced from cigarette cards. This is a superb book to browse through, printed on superior paper, and must be an essential reference work for any serious student of World War I. There is an equivalent volume from Schiffers about the Imperial German Army written by Charles Woolley (ISBN 0-7643-1104-2) which I am sure is equally as valuable.
