The SPAD XIII must be in the running for the title of best First World War fighter. This book describes the exploits of the many French, American, (they ordered more than anyone else), Italian and Belgian Aces who flew them. There is also a great deal about the less known and fearsome SPAD XII, which was only produced in limited numbers, was armed with a cannon which had to be reloaded by hand, and was only for the very skilful and brave. Plus the SPAD XVII with an even bigger engine, which never really succeeded.

I was interested to learn that the XIII was developed after Georges Guynemer wrote to the designer of the VII suggesting improvements - which sounds an eminently sensible way to conduct affairs. This book has many excellent profiles by Harry Dempsey, some wonderful photographs, and is very good value. As far as language is concerned, in this book, balloons are 'burned'!
