This is a massive work – the paper on which it is printed is of such high, thick quality that the average coffee table would strain under the weight. Not that it is just a coffee table book; it is a masterly compilation of almost everything there is to know about this hitherto under researched subject. The story is that the Germans invented dedicated ground support squadrons in time for the great advances of early 1918, where they were effective, although costly. When the advances ceased, the squadrons lost their reason for existence and were not reformed in any other role. As well as detailed lists of men, machines, armament and places, this book has splendid photographs, profiles, aeroplane plans and an excellent narrative enlivened with many personal accounts from the participants. I am so pleased that more is being discovered and publicised about the German side in the War.

This book really has something for everybody, and is highly recommended.
