being able to put a face to so many famous (and also unknown) names. In fact, many of the illustrations in the other books we enjoy, are obviously sourced from these cards. Leafing through this lavish volume, many thoughts struck me: why did some airmen have several pictures, even if they were not famous – it could not have been because they were handsome, for my namesake Max, Ritter von Muller is pretty unattractive – how many survived the Great War (if not the second); and, in general, what an ordinary looking bunch of young men they were. The introduction is a useful general history of the origins of postcards, and this book is one I am going to treasure. I may even start collecting!
