Gibraltar and airfields do not seem to go together, but there has been one there since 1915. It was built on what was the racecourse, (another thing that does not seem to go with Gibraltar). The Western end of the main runway extends 2000 feet into the sea, and the fierce unpredictable winds swirling around The Rock make flying interesting to this day. The RNAS started flying from there for submarine spotting with three Caudrons and four BE2cs, together with a Short seaplane and two Curtiss H4 flying boats. Then 265 Squadron RAF took over in 1918. Since then, the airport has flourished in both military and civilian roles, and this 'thumbnail sketch' does it justice mainly in pictures. |
