In the review of the book about airfields and airmen in the Ypres salient, the point was made that these were ephemeral, and hard to find after 80 years. This book underlines that point, for Narborough was the largest non-airship field in the British Isles by 1918, and correspondingly important, but today is totally invisible. Sadly the last remaining building burnt down in 1998, so how lucky we are that another group of devoted locals have exhumed and recorded for posterity yet another tale that is worth the telling.
This book is also an excellent read, well documented and illustrated, with some fascinating stories about the men and machines who served there. I know the area well, and have always enjoyed a visit, especially to the church where there are some splendid monuments (illustrated here), my main memory of which is how young so many of the casualties were. Of the pictures, I particularly enjoyed the Camera Gun shots - the Armstrong Whitworth
Quadruplane picture is worth having the book for alone. Very good local history. |
