The fact that this history of Jasta 12’s service during WWI is printed entirely in German should be no barrier to its purchase by any of our members interested in the subject. Its contents include some 147 photographs. Of these, 130 in black and white feature aircraft and personnel of the period and do vary considerably in quality. The remaining 17 coloured photographs show details of surviving aircraft – Breguet 14, SPAD XIII and a Fokker D.VII – and modern views of locations and people. There are also three maps showing the unit’s locations at different times during the war. The early photographs include an interesting selection of captured British and French aircraft and personnel.
The appendices include a comprehensive listing of the unit’s pilots with their dates of service with the unit, a detailed listing of the Siemens Schuckert D.III and D.IV aircraft that equipped it in the latter days but, sadly, no listing of the other aircraft – Fokker Monoplanes, Dr.I and Albatros D.III and D.V aircraft – from the earlier days. There is also a bibliography that includes a number of lesser-known early German titles.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book.
