Under the Guns of the Kaiser's Aces

bulletNorman Franks and Hal Giblin, Grub Street,

bulletReviewed by George Miller in Vol 34 No 3, Autumn 2003

Four more German Aces (Böhme, Müller, von Tutschek and Wolff) and their victims are profiled in this, the last of the Under The Guns trilogy. I particularly enjoyed reading about my namesake Müller who was Bavarian and a peasant (not a good basis for promotion in contemporary German military circles) but who finished as a Ritter and a 'von' with 36 victories and second only to the Red Baron in the number of honours awarded.

Each Ace and his protagonists gets a succinct 'life' written in great detail. There are many interesting photographs to go with the text, and two paintings for each Ace (one a victory the other defeat) which I did not greatly care for. The authors are justifiably proud that no one has yet challenged any of their identifications of either victories or victims in this series, which indicates the meticulous scholarship involved in producing these very readable and valuable reference works.
