The prolific Mr Franks has more than fifty books to his credit, and this one is a very good example. The story is told from the Official History, The Sky Their Battlefield, combat reports and letters home from both sides, and a lot of research into casualty lists and so on, in a very easy style that is pleasant to read. I found the description of Boelcke’s death and the subsequent obsequies very moving, and enjoyed all the potted biographies of both hunters and victims. There are many photographs which have not on the whole reproduced very well. Six comprehensive appendices and a bibliography make the book a valuable reference work as well.
