Another great production from Schiffer, about the most successful pursuit squadron in the United States Air Service in World War One. An interesting combination of official and personal accounts of day to day life in a Squadron, from setting up with nothing on 20 August 1917 at Kelly Field Texas, and then going to France after basic training to learn to fly, or their trades for the ground crews. By April 1918, the first (of six) Distinguished Service Crosses was awarded. They started with Nieuport 28s and yearned for SPAD XIIIs. When they arrived, they were very unreliable and disappointing. Nevertheless, the Squadron achieved 70 combat victories and distinguished themselves mightily. So many well known pilots served with the 94th: Raoul Lufbery, Eddie Rickenbacker, Ham Coolidge, Reed Chambers and Doug Campbell are names that spring off the page.
All this is described with a lively text, more than 375 photographs, colour profiles of Nieuports and SPADs, lists of pilots and aircraft, citations for medals, maps and an index on the usual beautiful paper. This is the definitive history of a famous US Squadron. |
