The authors have created as detailed a listing as possible covering all the claims and losses of the French Air Service during World War I. The French did not credit pilots with kills if they could not be confirmed, although they acknowledged 'Probable Kills'. Confirmed and probable claims are all listed, along with the Escadrille the pilot flew with and his running total of confirmed victories.
Every Bookshelf now contains a plea from me for more research to be done on World War I scores, because of the different methods used by the participants in their calculation, and this comprehensive volume is a good start. It is a chronological Diary of Casualties, claims and details thereof in a format that is easy to access.
Obviously, this is not a book to read for light relief, but it is an excellent reference work, although I was surprised to find the French ranks having their equivalents shown in the American Army and Navy. However the author is American, so this is excusable! |
