The author has written books about both the Bristol (reviewed in 31/2), and Gloster Companies (reviewed in 32/4), which I enjoyed. Although part of this book covers the same ground, there are further sections about engine builders and equipment makers as well as RAF units and airfields – there were 26 airfields and 11 other RFC/RAF units in the county in 1918. So much that is seminal in the world of aviation happened in Gloucestershire, from the fitting of the first ever aerial revolution counter (made by Smiths) to the birth of both Frederick Handley Page and Arthur Harris in Cheltenham and of course the first flight of our original Jet Fighter. All this is covered in an entertaining, well illustrated and informative book, which is more pocket friendly than, although not nearly as comprehensive as, the volume about Wiltshire reviewed earlier.
