This is a reprint in book form of a series of articles that appeared in Flight many years ago, about the author’s father’s experiences as an Observer in 20 Squadron. There are rather a lot of mistakes – for example Ypres is not in France and the main airport for Paris is not called Roland Garros, but this lively narrative is enlivened with some magnificent photographs, and the stories of life in the RFC during World War I bear telling. I found a lot of the present day interjections about the stupidity of the Generals and the Government of the time added little to the story, which can easily stand by itself as a contemporary account.
