This is another very good piece of local history by two members of the Airfield Research Group. The RFC established a training station in Driffield in 1917, and although the site was dismantled in the 20s, it was re-established to become part of No 4 Bomber Group as a bomber and fighter base during WW2. After that it was a jet fighter training unit and then Wing HQ and base of Thor missiles until it's second closure in 1963.
The first chapter deals with our War and details very interestingly the Zeppelin menace in the North East during 1915 and 1916. The construction of the aerodrome is fully described, with many wonderful photographs (what would we all do without the JMB/GSL collection?) from many sources, and maps. I found it quaint to read that nothing of the original can be seen to-day, but that 'archaeological' evidence of the aerodrome can be found!
I have a random thought; group photographs were very popular in WW2 and the personnel in many are pictured in front of aircraft with their propellers carefully lined up, and with every right ankle over left on one side, and left over right on the other. The lady (or gentleman) in the middle has ankles and knees primly together. We have changed in the last 60 years.
This is a good book and highly recommended. |
