This is the latest of a series of which I am becoming increasingly fond. The first half of the first book is devoted to an overview of the Scout pilot's war; there then follows an interesting chapter called 'The Nature of Claims', a subject which could do with some detailed research in my opinion, and finally an A-Z of Aces. Generally, flyers with 20 or more victories are listed and described, and inevitably some of all our heroes are excluded. There is a picture of Gwilym Lewis (12 victories), one of mine, but no write up. I especially admired the tactful way in which Lt Col WA Bishop's career and achievements are brought to our attention - one of the finest pieces of between the lines writing I have ever seen. Having said that, this book brings out the disproportionately enormous debt the Allies owed to the Empire in this, as in so many other, fields of battle during World War I.

There are lots of excellent pictures both of men and machines, 12 pages of colour plates (which I was surprised to find a little dingy and dull), and a good appendix. These books are quite up to the usual standard.
