This is a handsome companion volume to German Aces of World War I reviewed in 36/1. All Aces are listed, but the very number of them restricted the author to providing what pictures he could (the vast majority) to those with more than 10 victories, unless they were American, in which case all down to five are portrayed. A quick look once again reinforces the view that the Canadians were an amazing bunch of heroes. The author gets full marks from me for making the definitive definition of an Ace in his Introduction, but I would not pontificate on the subject without this book in my hand!
I am interested in the assertion that one of the reasons that the Germans usually fought behind their own lines, was to keep the secret of their interrupter gear. This book is a good record, as usual beautifully produced.
