Some of the most informative publications tend to be small soft-backs produced by dedicated enthusiasts about subjects that have hitherto received little coverage. This booklet falls into that category.

Guy Warner relates the history of the airship sub-station at Bentra (Whitehead) near Larne in Ulster. The station was established as a mooring-out site for SS and SSZ airships based at Luce Bay, across the North Channel on mainland Scotland.

He begins with a brief background to early aviation in Ulster, with reference to Hawker's 1913 visit during the Daily Mail Round Britain Circuit and includes an interesting 'new' photograph of the Sopwith seaplane.

The need for the airship station at Luce Bay is then discussed and that leads to the choice of Bentra as its sub-station. The history of the site is interwoven with details of the rise in submarine warfare by the German Navy and the consequent development of the Submarine Scout types of airship as an effective counter-measure.

The booklet contains many new and interesting photographs, as well as technical drawings of the relevant airship types. Highly recommended.
