This has the same format as the companion 'Battleground Europe' volume Airfields & Airmen of Ypres, the review of which caused such a stir in the Journal last year. The Somme is divided into three areas, itineraries are suggested for each, and the reader is taken round to where the airfields were, with maps of how they were then, and pictures of how they look now. Also there are descriptions of the relevant pilots, and where they now lie, if known. It is informative, and has an excellent what the author calls 'selective' index.
I cannot imagine going to the Somme again without this book tucked into my pocket. |
