This is the third of this excellent series, and from personal experience with the first two, will be an essential item in my pocket for my next visit to the area. Understandably, many more Germans are described in this volume than in the previous two, and the by now familiar maps, photographs and itineries, backed up by a masterly narrative and painstaking research, make it pretty easy to discover sites either familiar or new. I did not know that there was an American cemetery in the area, and neither of the ‘two unusual flying memorials’ described have I seen – yet.

I have only two small complaints: the author quite rightly says that as the series has expanded, cross referencing to the other books has become necessary. The first one I tried I could not understand. It said ‘The Channel Coast, Cement House Cemetery entry’. None of the books are called the former, and the only entry for the latter is in this book where I started from. The second complaint is that my copy of ‘Ypres’ is almost worn out! However don’t be put off by this - your next trip will be enhanced with the relevant one of these volumes.
