230 Squadron was formed on 20 August 1918 at Felixstowe, as part of the expansion of antisubmarine patrols at that time. However the author gives us a splendid overview of the RNAS from its formation – I had not realised that the RNAS had more aircraft on charge than the RFC at the outbreak of war. The first 26 pages are concerned with events up to 1929, and there are many excellent photographs as well. Reformed in 1934 the Squadron used flying boats (Singapores and Sunderlands) until disbandment again in 1957. Reformed in 1958 as an army liaison squadron, it converted to helicopters in 1963, a role in which it continues to this day. Writing this at the time when a row is brewing about the loss of various Scottish Infantry Regiments, I am impressed by the adaptability to change shown by the RAF over many years.
This is a first class Squadron history, enriched by referrals back to World War I, as the Squadron amalgamated with others whose brief previous histories are described. Superb photographs and artwork, comprehensive indices and bibliography show how this sort of history should be written.
